Kūmarahou: A Native Plant in Rongoā Māori
Kūmarahou: a native plant in rongoā Māori
Kūmarahou is a native New Zealand shrub with a long place in rongoā (traditional Māori healing). It is traditionally used in rongoā for respiratory health.
What is kūmarahou?
Kūmarahou (Pomaderris kumeraho) is a small native shrub. Our kūmarahou comes from the tribal regions (rohe) of Te Whakatōhea and Ngāti Awa. Its golden flowers are easy to spot in spring.
How it has been used in rongoā
For generations, kūmarahou has been prepared as an infusion (a tea-like drink) in rongoā. It is traditionally used for respiratory health. Practitioners learn the right plant, the right season and the right preparation from their elders.
We do not make medical claims about kūmarahou. If you have a health concern, please see your GP.
